I've decided that this is going to be the year I try my hand at the Hunter Field Target game. I purchased a BSA r10 from one of the vendors at the Pacific Airgun Show in .22 caliber with this in mind. It chrono's in at just under 12 FPE and has a reputation for being accurate.
I've purchased a portable bi-pod because the rules state you can use one, but you can't use a tripod rest.
I put a nice magazine holder on it, so I have three carrying with the rifle. One in the breach and two in the holder for a total of 21 rounds of ammo available before I have to reload a mag. Also, I've got a nice side wheel for better ranging.
Now I'm looking at which scope to install. I'd like it to have a setting for 16x, even if it's more powerful, as my understanding is that this is the maximum magnification they allow and you cannot touch the scope's zoom level once you start. If there's no setting for 16x, then you must use the next lower setting.
An illuminated reticle would be nice, but it must NOT be on the parallax side turret. I've already made that mistake - mounted up a scope and put the side wheel on; excitedly shouldered the gun, pointed down-range, and twisted the side wheel... yup - the reticle glowed. Grr...
So, what I'm wondering is if anyone here has shot HFT and what scope(s) they would recommend to a beginner?
Also, what tips might you have for me? Is there some (inexpensive) equipment I should have? Just be aware that I'm not going to get a specialized stock, mount a "gerbil", buy custom clothing, etc. to do this. I just want to take my rifle and have fun. I'm a decent shot, but I don't expect to win any trophies at my age.
